Summer Activity Calendar

In my physical education classes over the past several years I have had my students design an activity calendar (Sunshine Activity Calender) that they can use during the summer months to stay active!  I print off a generic calendar for July and August for each of my students and on a rainy day that we cannot go outside I take…See More

"Great idea! As an alternative, the students may have more opportunities to be successful in the primary and intermediate gardes by using a flingo. A flingo is a tube sock with a tennis ball inside. Tie the end with the ubiquitous duct tape and you…"

Enjoyment of Lifetime Fitness: Frisbee Fun!

One of our goals as physical educators is to have our students enjoy movement. I am always looking for activities to include in my classes that meet the standards but also provide fun for students. Last week in my sixth grade classes my students were working on the skill of throwing and catching a Frisbee. I had the students…See More

Fitness as a Fund Raiser

Last week my school hosted its first Fitness a thon.  The event was organized by our PTA, assistant principal and physical education department.  This was my school's first fundraiser that involved fitness.  The students were encouraged to raise $20.00 each and any student who raised $50.00 had their name put into a drawing for a…See More

Character Education in Boston!

Just like John Hichwa I too was in Boston last week attending the Naitonal AAHPERD Convention - well I tried to!  I was staying at the Hilton Back Bay (the hotel where the fire happened).  I was about two miles away from the hotel attending a presentation on a new pedometer -…See More

This is why I am passionate about Physical Education, Health and Wellness
I am passionate about physical education/health education because without your health you have nothing! I have recently teamed up with a wonderful 6th grade teacher who is very knowledgeable about brain based learning and the important role exercise plays! I already knew that our bodies were meant to move but now I am reading everything I can on the subject. I believe that by sharing information with students, staff, parents, administrators and community members about the correlation between exercise and learning we can share the important role that physical education plays in the overall curriculum. I believe that teaching quality physical education to all children is the only way we can fight the obesity crisis! I also believe that we must educate everyone in our schools about the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle and that we as physical education teachers are the ones who will lead the way so that everyone has the tools they need to lead a healthy lifestyle for a lifetime!
Skills: these are areas where I have expertise and might be able to help others.
Classroom management, Moderate to Vigorous Physical Activity, Heart Rate monitoring, Organizational skills, Assessment, Wellness and Nutrition
Needs: these are areas where I have questions and will be looking to learn from others.
Core stability, Functional fitness, Lead up games, Adapted teaching materials
The most valuable piece of advice I would offer to others regarding physical education.
The main emphasis in teaching quality physical education today should be providing our students with all the tools they need to lead a healthy lifestyle for a lifetime!
What I hope to gain from the NASPE Talk.
I hope to gain resources and ideas on how to provide high quality instruction to my students and also wellness information to the staff at my school so everyone can lead a healthy lifestyle for a lifetime!

Wellness Wednesdays!

Posted on April 26, 2012 at 5:00am 1 Comment

Each day at my school all seventh and eighth grade teachers start their day with SMART Start.  SMART Start happens during the first fifteen minutes of each day and this time is devoted to teachers building positive relationships with kids. My favorite day of the week is Wednesday!  The reason for this is the entire SMART Start time is devoted to wellness!  I have shared healthy recipes, discussed different fitness topics but my students favorite activity is "Walking Wednesday"!…
