Learning to strike a ball using a paddle and a volley foam ball will develop good hand-eye coordination. Learning and practicing these skills has a cross-over effect on many sport activities. Today, I will conclude the Striking Skill Lesson with the forehand, backhand, and will share some drills that include these skills.
Forehand (directions are for…

Striking skills are so important to a child’s motor development and yet, many times, it is made difficult when the equipment is not appropriate for the developmental age of the student. By using a paddle and a volley foam ball from the get-go, it makes it easier for the students to be successful.
This article is #1 in a two part series about…

If we provide fitness activities that are innately interesting to students, they will participate enthusiastically and improve their physical fitness without realizing it. When students enjoy their physical education activities, they are more likely to want to do it again.
I have two activities that that my students have enjoyed and the benefits gained can lead to have them asking for more.…

Marilyn Laidlaw said… John,
I do not know how to use the new format. How do I find the names and email addresses of other people on this forum? Do I have to look for previous comments in order to find people?
Marilyn Laidlaw said… Hello John,
Thanks for the warm welcome. I have taken a long time to respond to your note because I could not remember how to find the right part of the site and the comment section for you. I've recently had ANOTHER surgery and have been "out of it" as far as remembering some things. I've just gone back to work and I am also working on my National Board renewal. Frying pan into the fire!!! The new site is taking some getting used to, it is very different from the previous format. I'm glad to see that you are still involved! I'm looking forward to many more opportunities to share information from and with my colleagues.
Warmest regards,
Marilyn
Catherine Harder-Bernier said… Hi John -
Thanks for your note. I had the pleasure of attending a workshop you led at the MA convention in Worcester this past fall (2011) and am grateful for your service and now our "connection".
All best,
Cathy

jenni peters said… Hi John, Thank you for welcoming me into the "fold". I had a chance to participate in one of your programs at the MA convention. Lots of fun.
Looking forward to seeing and sharing terrific ideas.!
Thanks John. I just found this blog/site. Love it. It is a great way to spread our passion to other colleagues.
As I read through these comments I see many regarding "dance" as a bad word.
I have a complete "Dance Program" that I only allow sixth graders to join as it is a specialty class. I have 30 boys and 30 girls in each class and a waiting list. I teach them 5 dances (hip hop, ballroom, tap, lyrical, jazz) per semester and we perform at a school wide assembly and then travel around the community performing at events. The kids beg to get into the class and most are the "jocks" so their is no sugar coating the word "dance" and they are proud of it.
My 6th graders take Dance on 2 days per week and Kinetics on the other days so that way they can be active all week instead of only 2x per week like most districts have gone to. (Boo)
Just thought I'd share. Tell me what your specialty is.
